2023-Thodupuzha,Kerala
A place to provide comfort and nostalgia were key thoughts shared by the client when the project was commissioned. Located in a village setting in Thodupuzha, the house embraces the memories of the past by following the traditional courtyard layout juxtaposed with modern details. Keeping strong ties to the traditional architectural elements, a long verandah beside the porch acts both as a welcoming feature and a buffer between outside and inside. The design hinges on the relationship between humans and nature. The living, dining, and the family living lies open around the courtyard. All four bedrooms shape the left wing and are away from the main entrance. Although the underlying concept remains conventional, a modern touch is passed on through finishes and details. A fluted wall detail in the living & courtyard in the interiors and the gable in the exterior portrays current trends. Metal dominates the furniture details. The open and airy interiors and view of sky from the courtyard along with use of tile roof and naturally lit spaces boarded by green emphasize a tropical setting. These factors also bring additional value to living spaces. The bedrooms are the epitome of simplicity with clean layouts, minimal design details and a view to the outside to recharge the user’s senses. The material palette is neutral complemented by colorful and printed fabrics for all furniture in the primary areas. All throughout the spaces, there are artworks meticulously finished in metal and photo frames that showcase a plethora of family moments. The entire living and dining areas can be opened to the verandah and the full height glass windows are intended to enjoy the monsoon and the surrounding green. As every project revolves around openness and green, there exists a conscious decision to create a visual connection between the spaces that can be perceived as getting a glimpse of the dining and sit out from the porch entrance or the sit out, living and dining from the verandah and so on.
