PROJECT COMPLETION: 2017 | LOCATION: KUMILY
Located in a small plantation town, the house tries to unite the warmth of a traditional household with a mood created by contemporary elements.
The client has been lucky enough to possess flat land amidst the undulating terrain of the location, in order to fulfill his dream. The single storey house, welcomes each one into the living, family living and dining area, that forms the core, which is kept as open as possible. It is well connected with all other spaces, provides visibility to the range of green through the full height windows along the periphery and also through the courtyard/sit out that it unfolds to.
Borrowing cues from tradition, the courtyard is conceived as the favourite spot in the house, rich in different foliage, that brings in the feel of serene living. It is also a source for natural light seeping into the interiors throughout the day. The bedrooms are planned on either side of the courtyard and provide ample privacy, while being connected to the living spaces.
The front yard is softened with a green buffer, that creates a natural green zone along the street, maintains privacy and continues the flow of the local landscape to the interiors. The materials used for the project and the monochrome color scheme with subtle accents are essentials that characterize the concept. The detailing of the main slab that extends, interprets the elevation to include a floating roof.
‘The small town residence’ is also another attempt in blurring boundaries and an architecture that responds to the surroundings.
