A DREAM ON A HILL

PROJECT COMPLETION: 2011 | LOCATION: PAMPADUMPARA

The Prabhakar’s were very particular that their house had to look very unique and at the same time merge seamlessly with the surroundings. They also emphasized the desire to build it at a good height so that they could get a 360 degree view of their plantation.

A sublime topography reveals as you start your ascent to Pampadumpara, land of coffee plantations along the kumily - munnar route, where the house is located. A spot on 900 acres of land to build the house was chosen and raising the highest point further by 20 feet.

The project brief includes formal and informal family areas and other common spaces such as a kitchen, work area and store designed favouring a traditional Tamil culture. A courtyard has also been provided in the kitchen exclusively for drying spices and other agricultural produce, which also portrays their way of life.

The design revolves around the idea of having a series of openings and verandahs around the house that helps to frame views to the outside. The interiors were intended to have a variety of timeless artifacts belonging to the early Tamil culture and tradition which was also used effectively for different household purposes.

The house being at an elevated height thus provides a picture perfect shot especially with the backdrop of a cloudless sky.
